A few weeks ago I did a quick family portrait session with Vicky, Matthew and their two boys Finn and Isaac. As I mentioned in my last newsletter, they have opened another of their great toy shops – ‘Just Williams‘ near Clapham South tube station (just past the M&S, beside the Bath Shop). We popped over to Clapham Common for an hour. The boys were typically boisterous for that age, but we did get a few settled portraits too…

They now have a large canvas print of an image taken that afternoon hanging in their shop, go visit! Toys for grown-up kids too, like frisbees, juggling stuff – and do water pistols count..?

Spent a couple of hours on Wandsworth Common with Olivia, Duncan and their two boys Sam & Jack. The light kind of said black/white to me (and they like BW too). Considering Father’s Day is approaching, I’ll start with a couple of Duncan.

FATHER’S DAY! I better do a special offer promo… how about a free 8×10 print in 10×12 frame for Dad? He could put it on his desk at work perhaps. Contact me by 19 June and mention this to receive the offer.

Quick post as I’m trying to get the next issue of my newsletter ready (what, you’re not yet subscribed?!)

1. I have an App!

PhotoCharlie is just for iPhones so far, but Android version coming soon, stay posted. PLEASE DOWNLOAD IT!! So far the most downloads have been in China and the USA…

Many of the images have captions with info about how the photo was taken, or you can just enjoy looking at nice portraits and landscapes taken over the past 14 years or so.

2. A wedding I shot in Germany was featured in a German wedding magazine, thanks to the bride submitting it for publication. Images inside, click the link.

A quick blog post as I’ve been too busy recently!

Some of you may remember that I briefly mentioned this in my last newsletter. Anyway, a couple of months ago I did a couple of photo shoots for The Little Legs Company‘s summer range of clothes. Helen, a local (south London) mum is the lovely, down-to-earth owner of this great kids’ clothing company, check out the website if you’re in the UK, though being online I guess her market is almost anywhere!

The first shoot was a challenge as the weather was not yet summery. Now you know why those fancy fashion photo shoots are done in exotic tropical destinations – unfortunately there wasn’t the budget for that…

A quick post this week, my first wedding of the year was in Putney. There was a vintage theme, which is so popular at the moment. Isn’t it funny how something comes back into fashion after a period of being ‘so out of fashion’..? A little like ABBA – all those years of jumping up to dance when an ABBA tune came on, singing along kind of tongue in cheek but at the same time loving it… and those tunes were so catchy weren’t they… What we now call vintage was probably ‘old and very uncool’ for years immediately after it was originally in fashion. Then with time, we start thinking, ‘Ah, those were the good ol’ days, eh…’

Anyway, Leia’s vintage dress was lovely and Walter looked very dapper. Great jazz band Sapo Jazz – with whom Leia demonstrated some hidden talent by singing VERY well, great voice, I think she has another career path to choose from. 🙂

I little while ago I gained a Licentiateship (in weddings) with the SWPP.Pin this London photographer Charlie Round-Turner image to your Pinterest board
Now, I have also gained… drum roll… an Associateship (in portraiture) with the BIPP.

I submitted the photos shown below, hoping to gain a Licentiateship, the first tier qualification.
However, the assessment panel considered the quality so good they skipped me straight to an Associateship!

There are of course many other good images in my portfolio, which just didn’t quite fit alongside the others in this series. Some of you will also recognise shots that were originally in colour.

Thank you to my clients for being wonderful models!

But what’s the significance of qualifications?

Just because a photographer has no formal qualifications, doesn’t mean they are not an awesome artist and professional. Many (probably most) photographers have not bothered to apply for qualifications with any professional organisation – it is the quality of the images they craft that really matters.

On the other hand, I feel it does signify to my clients that I am committed to Continued Professional Development, and I have been judged to produce images of ‘a high standard of craftsmanship and creative ability’. It also gives me a needed reassurance – all those years of practising, printing in darkrooms (or sitting in front of the computer as it is now), 60-hour work-weeks to run a business, attending training programmes – it HAS made a difference.

Still, it is just one (very rewarding) milestone in a continuing journey (fade in uplifting soundtrack)…

Newsflash! I now have a Licentiate qualification from the SWPP.

I submitted a panel for mentoring, but they thought it was ready so sent it off for assessment – and it was accepted. I can see room for improvement of course, they commented that the whole panel should have been BW, but I received some very positive feedback. All 20 photos inside, see ‘view full post’.

UPDATE: I exhibited at a wedding fair on Sunday 27 Feb, Susan & Chris were the winners of the John Lewis vouchers, congratulations! Names were drawn by fellow exhibitors Jessica Valerie and Ahila Tom. And at the Covent Garden Wedding Show (Sunday 6 March), Ann & Tin were the winners of the vouchers. Thanks to all the other people who visited my stall and chatted with me!

This was a delux pre-wedding shoot around several London locations last year. Getting great photos was thanks to truly wonderful, enthusiastic models, assistance from their cousin/sister/brother-in-law holding flashguns – and time! It took about 8 hours from go to whoa, including breaks, clothes changes and travelling between locations…
We started off with natural light, sometimes using a little supplementary flash to mimic the sun (that was hiding most of that day), then using multi-flash set-ups for more impact later on.

Press play then choose full-screen and 720 HD settings for best results – enjoy!

This is the second recent family session, friends of yesterday’s family; taken on Tooting Common again, plus indoor shots too, but no two photo shoots are the same! Equally delightful family. It’s fascinating how one minute little Harry seems like a young baby, the next minute a very aware almost-toddler (he stands with help balancing).

This is the first of two recent baby portrait sessions. The other family (post to follow tomorrow) is friends with this one, both live near Tooting Common, London. Both families, both with delightful baby boys, are unfortunately leaving the country – and yes, they had decided that BEFORE I photographed them.

By the way, a quick note about the recent North London Wedding Show – Katie who visited my stand was the winner of the wine store vouchers, congratulations!

Now for some photos from a recent wedding in the beautiful Oranjerie Groot Warnsborn (and a local church) in Arnhem, Netherlands. Great sunny weather – which was lucky as the church was extremely dark! In the end there was some lovely spotlight-type effects in the church though…
